Module 1 : Introduction to Multimedia and Planning a Multimedia Project.

Description:

  • What is Multimedia and why would you want to do a Multimedia project?
  • Choosing a subject, treating a subject with still images. How a multimedia project differs from a simple television piece.
  • Storyboarding: that sketches out the content screen by screen
  • Thoughts on acquiring the audio. Audio is a hugely important and complex part of any project. It needs to be understood, and gathered with skill and attention for use in a project.
  • Writing a script, photos, video, audio and interview.

Practical Exercise:  Plan a Multimedia project; conceive the images, both still and audio needed. Write a short script, with audio and an interview to be used in the final individual project. Note: this important stage will have a bearing on the final project in these tutorials.
Conclusion:  At the end of this module the student will have a basic grounding in what a multimedia project involves. He or she will have been acquainted with the tools necessary to write, plan and undertake a multimedia project.

 

Module 2 : Basic Photography in Multimedia.

Description

  • Elementary rules of photography. Focus, exposure, lenses.
  • Rules of composition
  • Lighting and use of flash
  • Depth of Field

Practical Exercise:  The journalist will produce a sequence of sharp, well exposed and composed images. Thought must be given particularly to composition.
Conclusion:  For journalists that are not familiar with digital photography this module aims to give grounding that see that he or she is familiar with the rudiments of still image making.

 

Module 3 : Basic Photoshop for Multimedia

Description

  • Photoshop interface, layout and tools
  • Importing pictures from a digital camera
  • Resizing the image
  • Basic techniques of levels, contrast, brightness
  • Saving the files, formats and compression

Practical Exercise:  The journalist must import a series of still images into Photoshop, resize them to a size needed in a Multimedia project and save as jpeg files.
Conclusion:  This module will allow the journalist to move forward from shooting an image to importing it into the computer and applying a few basic adjustments before saving the image for use in the project.

 

Module 4 : Tools of the Trade. Using the computer applications needed for a multimedia Project. 

Description

  • NLE application: Familiarization with NLE Adobe Premiere CS4 / FCP interface.. Browser, Viewer, Canvas, Timeline and Tools.
  • Importing media to the NLE (photos, audio, video).
  • Using the Timeline and tools to establish a multimedia workflow. Basic Three point editing, transitions, corrections etc.
  • Integration of audio into the project. Editing and levels.
  • Encoding of finished project.

Practical exercise: Use the photos, audio (& music) provided to create a simple slideshow project using Premiere.

Conclusion:  A more advanced module where the journalist will learn the basics on software applications necessary to produce a simple Multimedia project.

 

Module 5 : Audio in a Multimedia Project.

Description:

  • Hardware needed for high quality audio acquisition.
  • Audio theory, and techniques
  • Microphones, types, audio patterns, usage. (omni, cardioid and hypercardioid). Which one to use and when
  •  Wireless (radio) mics vs wired mics
  • Acoustics, sound direction, mono & stereo sound.
  • Audio levels and audio control. Mic level - Line level - Phantom power. Getting the levels right
  •  Why the headphones are your best friend.
  • Importing and applying audio in a multimedia project.

Practical Exercise: To record various audio, using PC, Audio recorder and proper microphone techniques and to import into a Premiere timeline.

Conclusion: A module that will present the tools needed the acquire quality audio and acquaint the journalist with the techniques to record sound correctly.
